Everything you need to know about your CBT course
If you left 2022 feeling like you missed out on getting your CBT course booked, don’t panic! 2023 is a great time to start learning how to ride a scooter or motorbike, and NLMT is your local, experienced team ready to help you through your CBT course and pass your test. This month, NLMT tells you everything you need to know about your CBT course, including the benefits of a course and how to pass your test in 2023!
All learner riders need to complete a CBT course before they are able to ride unaccompanied on public roads. It’s important that you only book a CBT course with a registered and approved motorcycle school (ATB), as your course will not be valid otherwise. Before you take your CBT course, you must be in receipt of a full or provisional license that proves you are eligible to learn to ride a motorbike or moped. If you aren’t sure whether your provisional license allows you to undertake a course, take a look at the Driving License Categories page on Gov.UK.
Your CBT course offers five elements of training based on three modules, including:
- Introduction (theory training and practical training)
- Practical riding skills
- Practical on-road riding (2 hours of practice is mandatory)
The benefits of a CBT course
There are many benefits to obtaining your CBT license, and they don’t just revolve around being able to ride a motorbike! Motorcycles and mopeds are fast becoming popular options for those with provisional licenses, particularly for those who commute to work on a daily basis and for those who live in urban areas with limited parking spaces.
Riding a motorbike can help to reduce the bills you have associated with travel – particularly if you have to drive to work every day and pay for your parking. A motorbike or moped is cheaper to run, including to insure and tax, than a car and is more economically friendly when travelling longer distances.
Being able to ride a motorbike is more than just a means of travel. Motorbike riders will often tell you that riding is their hobby and passion. Whilst a car will get you from A to B, a motorbike or moped will give you the thrill you are looking for and offers a great hobby for weekends and quieter moments.
Whilst a CBT course is mandatory for anyone wishing to learn to ride a motorbike or moped, the course also offers plenty of support, advice and guidance to make you a confident rider whilst you are out on the roads. As a motorbike rider, you have to be much more aware of hazards around you, including cars, pedestrians and even the road surface. A CBT course ensures you are ready to take your test and handle a motorbike or moped independently.
Passing your CBT with instructors at NLMT
When you choose to undertake your CBT with NLMT, you will have peace of mind that the instructors supporting you throughout your course have many years of experience in motorbike training. As Driving Standards Agency authorised instructors, NLMT is able to offer and deliver your course as well as issue your DL196 certificate onsite.
When you arrive at our centre or one of our satellite sites, your documents and riding equipment will be checked. If for any reason, your documents or equipment are not suitable, we will explain what the problem is and how you can get this resolved before returning to undertake your CBT course. If we are happy with your documents, you will be escorted to our off-road site, where you will meet the NLMT instructor who will be supporting you during your CBT course.
Before we begin, your instructor will conduct a simple eye test to ensure your eyes are able to read and see comfortably at a distance of 20.5 metres. If you are unable to do so, you may have to wear glasses when riding your motorbike or moped, and you may need a further eye test before you are able to join the CBT course. If you are able to pass the eye test, we are then ready, to begin with your training based on the modules discussed above.
At NLMT, we understand you may be nervous and may have questions before you begin, and we want to reassure you that we are here to help and support you, making your course experience comfortable, educational and enjoyable throughout.
