At North London Motorcycle Training the motorbike training courses we provide are geared towards helping you pass your test.

Whether you have ridden before and are taking the next step in your motorcycle training, or whether you’re a complete novice, our DSA approved instructors are trained to provide first class motorcycle lessons.

As well as top instructors, we provide a complete range of courses suited to your ability – whether you’re a complete beginner, budding instructor or anything in-between. With exclusive access to a 300m2 training site where you can safely practice all your manoeuvres, and over 30 years’ experience in the industry, our training school provides a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience.

To ensure you are as equipped as possible to pass your test, we have compiled a list of the most common mistakes people make. If you’re planning on training for a full bike licence or just about to take a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course, read on to ensure you have the best possible chance of passing.

CBT Test

So you have your provisional motorcycle licence, you’ve researched the safest helmet, gloves and leathers to buy and you’ve got your eye on a gleaming 125cc scooter. You’re ready to take your CBT course and have no doubt you’ll complete the course with flying colours.

But there’s a problem – you haven’t really practiced your Highway Code. Lack of knowledge of the Highway Code is the most common reason why trainees fail the CBT course.  The book can be bought online via the government Safe Driving For Life website. It is essential reading for everyone and provides all the rules of the road including the legal requirements as well as advice and guidance on road safety and best practice.

As well as the rules of the road, the Highway Code is the source material for many of the motorcycle theory test questions.

Direct Access Scheme Module 1

If you want advanced training, the DAS Course allows you to take the Driving Standards Agency motorcycle theory test and involves a two part course.

This exam is all about control. You must demonstrate full control of the motorbike in a variety of conditions. Not many people fail the first module – Mod 1, however there are two areas where there commonly seems to be the most failures. These are Exercise 2 – the Slalom and Exercise 8 – Swerve at more than 32mph.

To find out more about the Mod 1 test, watch this DSA video which takes you through the exact test.

Direct Access Scheme Module 2

This exam is about demonstrating your ability to ride in a variety of road traffic conditions. To best prepare for the exam we will take you to your test area and also practice riding on roads, roundabouts, at junctions and on dual carriageways that have a high probability of being included on your test route.

However, there are some common fault areas.  Please take a look at these areas and practice them to give you the best possible chance of passing.

  • Changing Direction on a roundabout
  • Lane change with NO Observation
  • Following Distance of vehicle in front
  • Turning right in left lane at roundabout
  • Straight Line at roundabout.

To better prepare – watch this DSA video which takes you through the Module 2 test.

Hopefully we’ve given you a better idea now of what you need to prepare for, whether it’s for the full motorcycle licence or a CBT course for a 125cc motorbike or scooter.

Haven’t yet booked? For the CBT course you can book online here. If you want to advance your riding skills and are interested in the DAS course, we recommend you first book a free rider assessment so that we can advise on the best course for your ability. Book here to arrange the assessment.
